There is a truth about today's world that we all have ignored (and probably will keep ignoring)- our broken vacation system.
We are living on a planet that is going crazy in terms of its cutthroat competition. Everyone wants to achieve more, earn more, upskill more and the 'more' is actually making us blind.
For example, a person goes to school, does his homework, gives his papers, get good marks and attains contentment. But his parents and teachers tell him that he is also good in sports, he should focus on that in his vacations. He puts his head so much into achieving this new goal, that he forgets he had to rest. Every vacation, the same story happens, until he realised that he is burned out.
This may seem so simple but every school, institution and company have gotten in this race of telling individuals that they need to be a multi-performer. Agreed, building distinct and fresh skills is always a plus point but not when it feels like a pressure, rather than a hobby.
This marathon has took us so far and crushed us so well that even after being a part of a globally renowned institution, a person still feels underachieved. Unfortunately, we all look past that.
Companies make their employees work till their eyes pop out and their heart feels like it has never touched peace. Why not hiring more employees, having an equal distribution of work, getting more productivity because the employees would now have a good mental wellbeing, generating higher revenues and thus getting the money to pay off salaries?
Success surely comes to the one who puts in sheer and genuine efforts. But that doesn't mean that we give up on our peace and keep grinding like a horse. That doesn't mean that every ounce of competition acts like a drop in this ocean of unending pressure.
All I'm asking for is every institute and company to 'normalise' having a vacation. Normalise not having any exertion for only 15 days. That's enough to cure a burnout.
The warning signs of burnout are being negative about your work, having uncertain sleep patterns, irritability, anger, questioning the value of your work and being unnecessarily annoyed with your colleagues or batchmates.
You might be one of them. Stop this pressure of being the best or being at the top 1%
Ultimately, the essence of peace shouldn't be found when your mind goes numb. It should be regulated just like breathing so that the inner and outer demons can't shake us off.
Our systems need a change.
